Abstract

Breast cancer is a major health problem among women, and radiotherapy plays an important role in disease control. However, this therapy may cause various side effects. This study aimed to evaluate radiotherapy treatment in breast cancer patients at RSUD Dr. Moewardi Surakarta based on patient characteristics and radiotherapy utilization.  This study used a quantitative descriptive design with a retrospective approach based on medical record data. The sampling technique was total sampling, involving 74 patients who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data were analyzed using univariate analysis to describe the distribution of patient characteristics and radiotherapy side effects, and bivariate analysis using statistical tests to assess the relationship between variables. The results showed that most patients were aged 45–60 years (66.2%), all patients were female, and the most common cancer stage was stage IV (45.9%). The majority of tumor sizes ranged from 2–5 cm (62.2%). Radiotherapy was administered with various doses and fractionation schedules, predominantly for palliative purposes. The most common side effects were acute reactions such as radiation dermatitis, pain, and fatigue, as well as chronic effects including fibrosis and lymphedema. Statistical analysis indicated a significant relationship between radiotherapy treatment characteristics and the incidence of side effects in breast cancer patients. This study demonstrates that most breast cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy at RSUD Dr. Moewardi Surakarta were middle-aged with advanced-stage disease and experienced both acute and chronic radiotherapy side effects. Evaluation of radiotherapy treatment is essential to improve patient safety and quality of life.
