Abstract

Background: Cancer patients often experience significant emotional burdens due to the diagnosis, treatment process, and uncertainty regarding their prognosis. Psilocybin, a psychedelic compound found in certain mushroom species, has gained increasing attention in mental health research for its potential therapeutic effects in treating depression and anxiety.

Methods: This systematic review analyzed literature regarding the effectiveness of psilocybin in treating anxiety and depression among cancer patients, following the PRISMA guidelines. Four studies were included, and data extraction was performed by three independent reviewers. The quality of the studies was assessed using the Risk of Bias 2 (RoB-2) tool.

Results: Psilocybin shows potential as an effective adjunct therapy to reduce depression and anxiety levels in cancer patients when administered in a controlled and supervised clinical setting. Several studies reported significant reductions in depressive and anxiety symptoms after psilocybin therapy. Patients described the experience as profound and transformative, helping them confront fears of death, alleviate cancer-related anxiety, and improve overall quality of life.

Conclusion: Based on the results of this systematic review, psilocybin-assisted psychotherapy may serve as an innovative and effective therapeutic option for managing anxiety and depression in cancer patients. However, further research is needed to better understand its effects, safety, potential benefits, and risks before it can be widely implemented in clinical practice. This study reinforces the potential of psilocybin as a complementary intervention for reducing depression and anxiety disorders in cancer patients.
