Malnutrition is common among older adults and is closely associated with sarcopenia (loss of muscle mass), which negatively affects physical function and increases mortality risk. This literature review analyzes scientific studies published between 2019 and 2025 concerning malnutrition, sarcopenia, and nutrition education interventions for older adults. The global prevalence of malnutrition among older adults is estimated at approximately 18.6%. Malnutrition significantly increases the risk of sarcopenia (OR ≈ 3), and the coexistence of both conditions predicts higher mortality compared to sarcopenia alone. Nutritional interventions such as counseling and supplementation have been reported to improve dietary intake, body weight, and overall nutritional status in older adults. In addition, nutrition education programs have been shown to enhance nutritional knowledge as well as protein and calcium intake. International guidelines emphasize the importance of combining nutritional interventions with resistance exercise. In conclusion, structured nutrition education can improve dietary behavior among older adults and has the potential to prevent malnutrition and sarcopenia; however, strategies are needed to maintain long-term outcomes.
