Abstract

Maternal and neonatal mortality remain critical public health challenges in low- and middle-income countries, with inadequate birth preparedness and failure to recognize danger signs identified as key contributing factors. Community empowerment-based pregnant mother classes (Kelas Ibu Hamil) represent a structured educational intervention aimed at improving maternal knowledge, readiness for childbirth, and early complication recognition. This scoping review aims to map the available evidence on the effect of community empowerment-based pregnant mother classes on birth preparedness and complication prevention. This review followed the PRISMA-ScR guidelines, PCC (Population, Concept, Context) framework, and Arksey & O'Malley's methodological approach. A systematic search was conducted across five databases: PubMed, Scopus, CINAHL, Google Scholar, and ProQuest, covering publications from January 2015 to December 2024. Eligibility criteria included peer-reviewed studies in English or Indonesian involving pregnant women, birth preparedness interventions using community empowerment approaches, and maternal health outcomes. Two independent reviewers conducted screening and data charting. A total of 1,247 records were identified; after removing duplicates and applying inclusion/exclusion criteria, 24 studies were included. Three major themes emerged: (1) improved maternal knowledge and awareness regarding danger signs and birth preparedness, (2) enhanced community support and participation in maternal health programs, and (3) measurable reductions in complications during pregnancy and childbirth among women who attended community empowerment-based classes. Community empowerment-based pregnant mother classes significantly improve birth preparedness and support complication prevention. Strengthening community-based educational interventions through trained cadres and interdisciplinary collaboration is recommended to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality rates.
