Abstract

This systematic review examines the convergences and divergences between the Sufi concept of tazkiyatun nafs or purification of the soul and the character strengths framework within positive psychology. A comprehensive literature search was conducted using the Consensus platform, which accesses over 170 million scholarly publications. From an initial pool of 937 identified studies, 50 articles met the eligibility criteria and were selected for in-depth analysis. The findings indicate that both frameworks aim to promote moral development and human well-being through the cultivation of virtues, yet they are grounded in fundamentally different worldviews. Tazkiyatun nafs is rooted in a spiritual and theocentric paradigm, whereas the character strengths approach is embedded within a secular and humanistic framework. Key areas of convergence include shared core virtues such as patience, gratitude, and humility, which function as protective factors for mental health across diverse cultural contexts. Significant divergences emerge in terms of epistemology, methodology, and ultimate goals. Tazkiyatun nafs emphasizes spiritual transcendence and alignment with the divine will as its final aim, while character strengths prioritize empirical validation and the pursuit of flourishing within secular paradigms. Emerging evidence suggests that integrative applications of these approaches hold promise in educational and therapeutic settings. However, challenges related to measurement validity, particularly in capturing deeply spiritual dimensions, remain substantial. This review identifies critical research gaps and proposes future directions for culturally sensitive and integrative models of holistic character development.
