Abstract

Mastery of English business writing skills is an essential competence for Accounting students in the global era. However, this skill is often hindered by grammatical difficulties and issues related to language formality. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools in improving the quality of students’ business writing, while also exploring their perceptions of the use of this technology in the classroom. This study adopted a mixed-methods approach with a pre-experimental One-Group Pretest-Posttest design. The research participants consisted of 21 sixth-semester students of the Accounting Study Program at STIE Kesuma Negara Blitar, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through writing performance tests consisting of business emails and cover letters, as well as a questionnaire based on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). The results of the quantitative data analysis using the Paired Sample T-test showed a highly significant improvement in achievement scores (p < 0.05), with the class average increasing from 62.50 in the pre-test to 81.20 in the post-test. The most substantial improvement was observed in grammar and the appropriateness of formal tone. Qualitatively, the questionnaire data revealed highly positive student acceptance; the majority of students perceived AI as very easy to use and beneficial as a form of scaffolding that reduced writing anxiety. In conclusion, AI proved to be effective as a linguistic “copilot” that successfully enhanced the quality of business documents and fostered students’ learning autonomy within the scope of English for Specific Purposes (ESP).
